The World Be Flat

I used to think that you could never trust a pirate. Now I'm not so sure.

The gentleman in this picture attended the counter-protest of Westboro Baptist's visit to Hilliard Darby High School in central Ohio yesterday.

The pirate man explained that the words on the sign he held were as ridiculous as the hate filled signs held by the Westboro protestors... and I could not agree more.

If you aren't familiar with the history of this hate-filled group posing as a church consider yourself lucky.  They are not of God.

I'll be the first to admit that I do not agree with the homosexual lifestyle. I've not hidden that fact from anyone. However, I do find issue with a group posing as "Christians", yet their message is one of hatred toward the sinner, not the sin itself.

This group makes its money through lawsuits that arise from encounters at protests like the one at Hilliard Darby.  If people would just ignore them they would eventually go away.. or at very least their "message" would be greatly impacted.

Imagine these tiny people holding their sad little signs and no one paying them attention.  It would be fantastic. However, I do get the desire to protest... and some good actually comes of it.

When the hate-mobile rolls into a city near you, they make sure you know about it.  They do this on purpose so they get the biggest possible group that they can to counter-protest.  There is one thing that these minions of satan take for granted, though.  The power of love and community.

A group like Westboro comes into town with the intention of division; in reality it brings people together.

Where else would you see Christians standing with Atheists? How often can you see folks of every walk of life banding together for one cause?  Not very often.

These counter-protests do prove a point. Love is a pretty amazing thing.  While hate tears down, love builds up. Where hate divides, love brings together.  Things like this get everyone right to the doorstep of the truth.

Love itself is amazing, but God's love is even better. We come together in protest... why can't we come together in the name of God's love?  It may take longer to win that battle... but if we don't at least try to fight what are we doing on this earth?

We might as well join in with the plight of pirate man and just proclaim, "The world be flat".

I'm a friend of said pirate man and sent him a link to this blog post. Found it while trying to find the video of him on local news and unfortunately it's only for a couple seconds, though.

That group is the reason people don't respect Christians. Jesus was the ultimate example of loving the sinner and hating the sin. He loved the Pharisees and Sadducees even though they made a mockery of God's house of worship. He loved Mary Magdalene even though she had not always made the right choices. He loves me even though I don't always act like I should.

    PS: Loved the pirate man!
