58-2. Rainy Days

Our family was on "vacation" last week. Our vacations lately have been anything but restful. This was no exception.

We cleared out mulch. We moved sod. We pulled up and cut out roots. We moved dirt and rocks and leveled it out.

All of that just to add pavers to an area about 10' x 25'.

The only plan we had was to take the kids to the zoo on Tuesday, but other than that it was work, work work.

However, it rained, rained rained. It was chilly and rainy most of the week. The ground was muddy, my shoes kept getting stuck, and we could not go to the zoo on Tuesday.

Or Wednesday... or Thursday.

We kept working... it kept raining, but a growing frustration was there. Last week was sunny and in the 80's and 90's. Most of this week has been very nice. So, we asked a selfish, but natural question?

"Why us? Why during our vacation week?"

The answer came to us over the weekend. On Friday there was rain forecasted for the afternoon, but we decided to just go ahead and take the kids to the zoo. We are so glad we did.

Temperatures in the mid 70s. We didn't have to wait in line for anything. We rode the carrousel twice with no one other than the four of us on it. It was a great day.

When we got to get back to working over the weekend it was sunny and a little warm. Then the light bulb went off.

  • It was much more comfortable to work in the chilly temperatures than 90+ degrees. Sweating was minimal.
  • The rain helped in turning the ground over... everything was soft.
  • The beautiful zoo day allowed us to step away from the work and allowed the ground to start to dry out for the next step of what we were doing.
  • The rainy week helped us appreciate the beautiful weekend weather that much more.

Sometimes when things get bad for us in life, it is hard to appreciate why. Not until the storm passes can you see why it happened the way it did.
